Shannon DeVine, baritone, made his Carnegie Hall debut in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Dona Nobis Pacem and performed the role of Michele in Il Tabarro with New York Vertical Players Repertory. Shannon was praised by The New York Times as “a very impressive baritone in the role of Michele” and noted they “can’t wait to see him on bigger and more important stages.” In New York City, he also made a very successful his debut with the Opera Orchestra of New York under Eve Queler in a concert performance of Wagner’s Rienzi, also regarded in reviews as a clear vocal and dramatic standout of the performance.
Mr. DeVine has performed Alfio in Cavalleria Rusticana, Renato in Un Ballo in Maschera, the title role in Rigoletto, Leporello in Don Giovanni and Ford in Falstaff at the Théâtre Municipal de Toulouse (France). His other notable roles include Valentin in Faust, Marcello in La Bohème, and Count di Luna in Il Trovatore, Iago in Otello with One World Symphony in New York City as well as Germont in La Traviata and Rocco in Beethoven’s Fidelio with Opera Company of Brooklyn and also sung Rodrigo in Don Carlo in NYC. He recently performed the role of The Priest in Gisle Gverndok’s World Premiere work, A Handful of Earth with the New York Opera Society.
Other performances include Scarpia in Tosca at the Festival of the Aegean (Greece) and participation as the leading baritone in the world premiere of I Tre Compagni with Encompass Opera in New York. He has also covered the roles of Nelusco in Meyerbeer’s L’Africaine, and sung Michonnet in Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur, and Carlo Gérard in Giordano’s Andrea Chénier with the Opera Orchestra of New York.
Mr. DeVine earned his Master of Music degree from Juilliard School, where he performed Demetrius in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Silvio in Pagliacci. He made his professional debut at age 19 as Prince Yamadori in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly with Connecticut Opera.
He has appeared with the Aspen Opera Theater Center as Michele in Il Tabarro and Ford in Falstaff under the baton of renowned maestro Julius Rudel. With Houston Grand Opera, he performed Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, in Bizet’s Carmen (in a production by Ron Daniels), conducted by Alain Lombard), as well as Riolobo in Florencia en las Amazonas and Top in Copland’s The Tender Land.
Mr. DeVine is a recipient of the Licia Albanese–Puccini Foundation Award and winner of the Verdi Concerto Competition at the Aspen Music Festival and a finalist of the Francisco Vinas International Opera Competition in Barcelona and at the Opera de la Bastille in Paris. He also appeared at the Tanglewood Music Center as José Tripaldi in Osvaldo Golijov’s world premiere Ainadamar, a role created for Mr. De Vine and conducted by Robert Spano with the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
